Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser just vetoed a bill that was passed by the City Council.
The bill would have decriminalized fare evasion of the local metro, essentially it would make it legal to steal the service of the cities’ transportation.
Those who supported the bill claimed that the laws disproportionately affected people of color.
However, Bowser sent a letter to Democratic Council Chairman Phil Mendelson stating that they, “should not encourage lawlessness on Metro, which could exacerbate public safety concerns on our Metro and in our city.”
This is only the second time Bowser has used her power to veto since being elected in 2015.
