Can Trump Pardon Himself?

Former Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ) believes that if President Trump was to pardon himself it would result in his impeachment.

Christie said, “Listen, there’s no way that will happen, and the reason it won’t is because it’ll become a political problem.”

Adding, “If the president were to pardon himself, he’ll get impeached.”

Re the president pardoning himself, what crime has he been convicted of? Please correct me should I be in error, but my understanding of “pardon” is as follows. An individual was accused, tried, found guilty, sentenced and even punished for some action violative of existing law. A pardon sets aside any finding of guilt. If my understanding is incorrect, please clarify. Thanks.
