U.S. and Australian authorities successfully joined forces and seized a record 1.7 tons of methamphetamine at seaport in the Los Angeles/Long Beach area.
Details from the Customs and Border Protection agency noted that three shipping containers were filled with speakers that housed the drugs.
Authorities also took possession of 55.9 pounds of cocaine and an additional 11.5 pounds of heroin. The total street value of the seizure equalling roughly $1.29 billion according to Australian officials.
Homeland Security Investigations special agent-in-charge Joseph Macias, shared “There’s no question that the criminal organization behind this scheme has been dealt a significant blow.”
U.S. police note that this is the largest seizure of methamphetamine to ever occur in the United States.
So far two Americans and four Australians have been arrested in connection to the case.
