Republicans are going out of their way to defend Chelsea Clinton after students of New York University attempted to blame her for the shootings in New Zealand.
Chelsea was attending a vigil at NYU for victims of the attack when she became a victim herself. Protesters came to berate her citing how she called for “all public figures to not traffic in anti-Semitism.”
Student Leen Dweik is one of the many who accosted the young Clinton saying, “This right here is the result of a massacre stoked by people like you and the words that you have put out into the world.” He continued, “I want you to know that. I want you to feel that deep inside. The 49 people died because of the rhetoric you put out there.”
Clinton did try to placate those around sharing, “I’m so sorry that you feel that way. It was certainly never my intention. I do believe words matter. I believe we have to show solidarity.”
However, many Republicans are speaking up for Clinton against the hate she was shown. Notably among them was Donald Trump Jr., who tweeted in Clinton’s defense.
“It’s sickening to see people blame @ChelseaClinton for the NZ attacks because she spoke out against anti-Semitism. We should all be condemning anti-Semitism & all forms of hate. Chelsea should be praised for speaking up. Anyone who doesn’t understand this is part of the problem.”
Republican Rep. Dan Crenshaw also came to Clinton’s defense via Twitter. “This is the kind of insanity poisoning young minds, and led to the terrible accusations against Chelsea Clinton at NYU. Chelsea Clinton is not to blame,” Crenshaw posted.
