Tillerson: ‘Steps Are Under Way’ to Remove Assad

On Thursday, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said “steps are under way” to form an international coalition to remove the president of Syria Bashar al-Assad after Tuesday’s chemical bombings in Syria.

Partial transcript as follows:

TILLERSON: Well obviously, the events that have occurred in Syria with the chemical weapons attack here in the past day I think have just horrified all of us and brought to the front pages and to our television screens as well the tragedy that is part of the Syrian conflict. There is no doubt in our mind and the information we have supports that Syria, the Syrian regime under the leadership of Bashar al-Assad are responsible for this attack and I think further it’s very important that the Russian government consider carefully their continued support for the Assad regime.

REPORTER: Does Assad have to go?

TILLERSON: Assad’s role in the future is uncertain and with the acts that he has taken, it would seem that there would be no role for him to govern the Syrian people.

REPORTER: And what steps is the United States prepared to take in order to remove him from power?

TILLERSON: The process by which Assad would leave I think requires an international community effort, both to first defeat ISIS within Syria, to stabilize the Syrian country, to avoid further civil war and then to work collectively with our partners around the world through a political process that would lead to Assad leaving.

REPORTER: So will you and President Trump organize an international coalition to remove Assad?

TILLERSON: Those steps are under way.

REPORTER: Has President Trump been talking about that with other leaders.

TILLERSON:  We are considering an appropriate response which violates all previous U.N. resolutions, violates international norms and long-held agreements between parties including the Syrian regime, the Russian government and all other members of the U.N. Security Council. It’s a serious matter. It requires a serious response. Thank you.

Let me guess, no one will join the coalition which leaves the U.S. and a handful of rebels to fight Syria, Russia and Iran. If the rebels do win, Syria will turn into another theocratic Iran. Only Syria, Russia and Iran can win this one. I smell another Quagmire.

    • David Hollingsworth

So, to hell with the innocents, huh bud. How would you feel if you had family among the victims, or perhaps if the same thing happened here. There is no place in a civilized world for the likes of Assad. Like all terrorists, he must be dealt with decisively and without compromise so people like you can continue to enjoy the freedom to criticize those who want to do the right thing for all of us so that we can remain safe and free. And yes, even if we have to go it alone. Our country is the LAST hope on the planet for democracy and the (God given) freedom it provides. If our democratic republic fails, freedom across the globe will (eventually) disappear and what we see in Syria and most of the middle east will be the norm.

      • Sharon Windus

Isn’t that what these “islamic” peoples and soros want? Total world domination. Why do you think we are getting the terrorists coming to the USA as “refugees”? They don’t want to be American Citizens.. They are trying to set up their foul “sharia” here in the US. They are here to destroy everything and take over the world making everyone who isn’t one of them into a slave or dead.

      • Chuck Rosenthal

You need to read up a bit more about democracy.. Aside from that, our country is, indeed, the last hope, but do we really know for sure that Assad dumped poison gas on these victims? ISIS/ISIL are more likely to be willing to do it, even for fake PR purposes. Oh, and should we get rid of Assad, whom have you decided ought to lead Syria, ISIS, al Qaeda? Who?

  • Lennie Corriveau

I think President needs to find some new advisors .I think we will find that it was the terrorists who used the gas and not Assad as it turned out to be in 2013 . Assad has no reason to gas his own people . The terrorists do . Assad is beating them in a big way and they want him gone .

The US strike on the airbase provided no evidence on it being a chemical weapons depot.
    Something stinks.

Will this plan be like the one where Hussein was removed from Iraq? That worked out real well didn’t it? When did the international committee step in to remove Iraq’s dictator and restore the government of Iraq? After sixteen years of war, one has not yet seen a restored government in Iraq or Afghanistan or Libya. In fact, the Islamic terrorist have free reign in all three of those countries to this day. Will we ever learn?

What the U.S. and participating allies are doing right now, is solidifying the Arab world and the muslim brotherhood movement in the M.E. By removing dictators who were at least willing to work with the western world and maintain control over their own people, they are assisting in the muslim venture to create a caliphate that will rule over the M.E. Ever wondered why the Arab Kings have never stepped in to resolve these issues in the M.E.? If they did, they would immediately lose their influence in the muslim world.

In the meantime, the U.S. will send it’s troops into the middle of this hornets nest in Syria, to be killed by both the muslims and the Russians. At the same time, it will be starting another war with N.Korea in the Far East. This will give China the justification to take over the South China Sea as well. Let’s all go to war right? It would seem that our nation cannot live out a decade without going to war with another sovereign nation on this planet. What is wrong with this scenario?

    • David Hollingsworth

Oh quit your whining. The failure of Iraq has been our lack of commitment to
FINISH the job and create a real military presence there that is not ham-strung by spineless politicians. This has been our pattern as a country since the Korean
War when weak, politically correct, misguided politicians (democrats and republicans alike) have not had the stomach to do what it takes to prevail. We need to look at
WWI and WWII as our models for success and quit pretending that the wolf is not at our gate with Islamo-fascist terrorism. We are faced with a life and death decision in how we deal with terrorism, both for OUR country and for the world. If we do not do it nobody else will, or even can. We need to choose victory, or by default, we choose defeat by this truly evil force. There is nothing in between. There must be no compromise. Grow a spine and get onboard with doing what it takes!

      • Patriot41

Much of what you say is true when it comes to politicians who have no spine. However there is much more to this picture that is not being said.

We could start with the fact that we are a sovereign Republic, because our forefathers did not want us trying to build a monarchy or become Empire builders. Neo cons who have been leading us to war over the last half century, could care less about our Constitution or our sovereign Republic. Instead, they are continually meddling in foreign disputes, instead of protecting our own national security interest here at home and that has been my point all along.

Had we not been meddling in the M.E. to begin with, 911 would never have happened! Had we enforced our existing immigration laws, we would not have to be worrying about terrorists crossing our borders and creating havoc as they have been doing over the last fifteen years. All of that could have been prevented had we had a Congress that believed in following our Constitution and enforcing our laws.

Most importantly, we have a new president whose party is trying to destroy him. The opposition party is encouraging sedition and refusing to acknowledge the will of the people who voted for our new president. The mainstream media is trying to undermine every step of the president, by spreading misinformation about him and his actions. Our NSA, FBI, CIA and local law enforcement agencies in many larger cities, are also ignoring the orders of the president of the United States. Are you so blind, that you cannot see the danger in this current political situation here in this severely divided nation? Do you honestly believe that the enemy nations to the U.S., do not also see what is happening here in the U.S.?

If we were a politically united nation as we became in WW II, it would be an entirely different situation, but we are anything but united. We have people outwardly encouraging the assignation of our president. We have a political party calling for the impeachment of the president. We have justices who are turning their heads the other way when it comes to rendering justice. We have racial discord across the nation. We have rampant drug cartels taking control of major cities. Hello, are you getting the true picture here? You don’t go merely off to war in the M.E. and Far East, when your nation has become lawless and is seriously divided. There is a greater danger to the national security here at home, then from any other nation on this planet!

By the way I have a spine, even though it was severely damaged in the Vietnam war, another war this nation should have never participated in to begin with. In case you missed the results of that war, the communist eventually took over that country after we fought for it’s freedom for over thirteen years. We have seen the same results in all of the other wars we have been involved in every since, only it is the muslims that end up running the nations, after we have dethroned their leaders and government. Take off the blinders man and face reality for a change!

    • Frank

Your about as phony as your talking points.

      • Patriot41

There is nothing phony about the truth!

      • Chuck Rosenthal

If you actually understood his talking points you might take a different position, but you’d have to have a brain to manage that.

      • ONLYJB1

Sorry Frank, looks like you lost!

        • Frank

Thanks ya’ll, so some are paying att. GO P. TRUMP!!!!!!!!

  • Chuck Rosenthal

Great job Rex, now WHO ARE YOU ADVOCATING TO REPLACE ASSAD???!!!! It should be somebody kinder and gentler, don’t you think? Or, perhaps SOMEBODY WHO IS MORE AMENABLE TO THE INTERNATIONAL BANKSTERS?

  • Badger

Remove Assad when you don’t even know for sure that he did the deed? This is lunacy. I’m English so it isn’t my vote that Trump got, but I’d be pretty plssed off it was. Just who the hell is going to replace Assad? Will he protect the 1.8 million Christians in Syria as Assad does? You bet your life he won’t.

  • Joe Snowblower

Hope the cure is not worse than the illness …….
who knows what kind of monster is waiting in the wings to take Ass ad’s place .
